Computer Graphics
Photoshop
Students will learn how to work with: layers, selection, and editing tools to successfully combine a series of digital images into a new composite image. The final product will demonstrate the students’ skills and understanding of Photoshop. It is very important for students to understand this program’s fundamental operations as they apply to digital manipulation. Through this project, students will develop a deeper understanding of the social/cultural impact of digital image manipulation.

After reading the powerpoint presentation students will complete the worksheet Raster Vs. Vector.
To understand Photoshop and its capabilities view some examples of Photoshop work located in your assignment folder.
Learning Photoshop: Students will be given approx. 5 classes to learn how to use Photoshop and to produce a photo collage. The initial three days will focus on learning the basic tools, for example, Day 1 - overview of Photoshop, selection tools, and layers; Day 2 - layers and some effects; Day 3 - effects and composition. The remaining days will be used to hone skills and create the photo collage/composition.

Illustrator
Illustrator is a vector drawing program. Thus anything -- shapes/text -- you create in Illustrator will retain it's clarity regardless of the amount of zoom or scaling of the object. This is the program that is ideally suited for creating logos, etc. During this unit, you will practice and combine the basic tools and uses of the program learned in the text/logo design unit. Later you will create a logo as well as a DVD cover for a jewel case.
Computer Graphics Assignment: Photoshop/Illustrator Due: TBA in class
During this 8-9 day unit, you will design and produce an original DVD/CD cover or Poster (Movie, Recruiting, Band, etc.). You will use Illustrator to complete all graphics and Photoshop CS4 to perform any required photo manipulation. To complete the project, follow the schedule listed below:
DVD Cover/Poster Project: Initial Stage
Follow the guidelines below to complete your DVD cover--download the Illustrator Template for sizes:
Follow the guidelines below to complete your Poster--some students prefer to create a Movie Poster based on their Chase Scene video, Band/Music Poster, or a Recruiting Poster, etc:

DVD Cover/Poster Project: Initial Stage
- Begin by creating a series of 6-8 thumbnail drawings of the front and back cover of your CD (small, rough sketches). You will also produce rough sketches of the back DVD graphics and required liner notes (lyrics, info, etc.). You can design a cover based on an existing artist/game/software, but all titles and graphics MUST BE ORIGINAL. Indicate location of barcode, label information, etc.
- Choose your favourite design from the thumbnails and produce a reworked rough copy to correct scale (use a ruler, add colour, etc) of both the front and back.
- Have the roughs approved/initialled by your instructor before beginning work on the computer. Once approved, you can begin production of your final DVD cover.
Follow the guidelines below to complete your DVD cover--download the Illustrator Template for sizes:
- Produce sleeve (front and back, including liner notes), back insert cover and spine (see layout below). Cover must be based on roughs.
- Your cover will feature a number of advanced Illustrator tools, including: one example of text fit to a path; at least one example of drop shadow or extrusion; at least one example of an effect from the Illustrator effects menu (such as lens); minimum one example of combined, intersected or welded objects; edited and/or manipulated photos (in Photoshop) - sized to fit, proper resolution/file format for printing.
- Hand in: All computer files and one copy of printed cover, cut to size for jewel case; ALL rough materials (as listed above).
Follow the guidelines below to complete your Poster--some students prefer to create a Movie Poster based on their Chase Scene video, Band/Music Poster, or a Recruiting Poster, etc:
- Create an Adobe Illustrator file with the following dimensions -- 27 inches wide by 40 inches high (68 cm X 107 Ccm) -- these are approximate sizes as movie posters tend to vary by a few inches/centimetres.
- Please note, creating a poster will be a more difficult challenge as using high quality images will be harder to find -- as well as file sizes will be "huge" to accommodate the poster dimensions (make sure you start on the D drive of the computer).
